Celebrating World Pie Day, takes us back to our childhood days, as if these days in the autumn has been made for pies. The history of pies is as rich as rich, as its flavors. From the ancient Egyptians who filled their pies with nuts, fruits and honey, to the Greeks who loved it and customized it with their secret ingredients and passed on to the Romans, who started offering it to their deities. As and when pie travelled around the world, it was loved by all and customized according to local recipes and ingredients available. 


As pie travelled around the world through all these years, it was adapted with love by all and fit into every culture and custom. This is one reason that in America, it is an American favorite and some of the famous types bears the name of the particular country it was adapted. 


We all love pies, especially the kids. It can not only be made in various ways, its taste and flavor can also be customized accordingly from sweet to savour. Moreover, it has also been marked as a healthy food and does not effects the health. 


Well these are some common facts about pies, now let’s discover some of the amazing facts about this food this World Pie Day and here they are:

Pie is almost 600 years old food item, apple pie was first made in England.

Apple pie is mainly considered as a comfort dessert. Modifications were made to this dish as per preferences, and in earlier America people used to make this pie dish with take-off crust – first bake the apple in the crust and then remove it. Sugar and spices used to be added later according to taste.

According to apple pie appreciators there is a unique surprise having it with ice cream.

As per historians, pie was first made in Egypt that dates back to 9500 B.C.

During the older times, pie contained assortments of meats and fish, fruit pies appeared in the late 16th century.

It has been estimated that around 1 billion pounds are spend on pies every year in Britain, and out of which pork pies leads the race.

“Tweetie Pie” is an English cartoon movie that featured the word ‘Pie’ and won Oscars in 1947.

Apart from apple, other fruits like strawberries, blackberries and apricot is also used as filling in pies and similarly nutmeg, cinnamon, cloves, ginger are also used to flavor the dish.

Shakespear in his novel ‘A Winter’s Tale’ gave the recipe of a pie using mace, ginger, nutmeg, prunes, raisins and saffron.  

 

During the Middle Ages in England, pie crusts were used as dishes to cook meat. While everyone ate the meat, the crusts were given to their servants and beggars to eat. 


We enjoy pie today made of different ingredients, like meats, fish, vegetables, berries, nuts and fruits, as well as creams, cheese and custards. Pie has been in many families passed on to generation after generation and still enjoyed in the same way. Today, the smell of baking pies fonder our memories of getting together with families and friends.
