Breastfeed your baby – it is true that breastfeeding burns calories. It has been shown that nursing a new born can burn up to 500 calories a day – the equivalent of walking 2 hours! It is of course important to make sure that you are not only spending calories but also consuming them but it is a reassuring thought for new mothers to know that they are burning calories by nursing their new born.
Eat many small meals – Post pregnancy diets must consist of several smaller meals daily rather than 2 – 3 large meals. It is important to commit to nutritious diet plans and restrict calories consumption between 1800 – 2200 calories when nursing. Make sure that carbohydrates and proteins are combined in every meal.
Keep active – Make sure that exercise is a part of your daily routine. Since due to nursing a new mother may not be able to leave home regularly exercise has to take other forms such as dancing or light aerobics. Try and keep your muscles toned especially those in your mid section. Lifting the bay at regular intervals helps keep arms and shoulder toned but does nothing for belly fat. Doing some crunches and sit ups would be very helpful.
Drink water – Not only do you need a healthy diet plan but it is very important to stay hydrated through the day. Try and avoid excessive caffeine. Replace coffee with herbal tea and do not consume sodas.
Get quality sleep – Though nearly impossible to sleep around a new born try and get some shut eye. Sleep reduces stress and cortisol levels. Studies have shown that mums who sleep less than five hours each day are more likely to hold on to post partum weight.
Use a belly wrap – Belly wraps to help new mothers lose weight have been around for long while. The gentle pressure exerted by post partum belly wrap helps the uterus to return to its normal position and helps in bringing the stomach back to its normal size.
